Fluent English in 11 Easy Steps Part 2

Updated: Dec 6, 2019

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times by and the gap between where you are with your English and where you would like to be. You would love to express yourself clearly and confidently without second guessing every phrase or construction. What a relief it would be to feel as sharp in English as you do in your native language. Sadly, there are no magic pills available for that, but there are some shortcuts and hacks that you can implement to give you a boost in your progress and confidence.

Sleep on it

Here's a quick way to sneak in a bit of extra learning at the end of the day! You can teach yourself a bit of vocabulary right before you turn in for the night by reviewing just a bit of vocabulary before you go to sleep. It’s best to keep a pen and a small notebook by your bedside table and choose a few words you’d like to remember easily the next day. This is a perfect exercise for tackling those words that you can never seem to remember when you need them. Start with a few words at a time, preferably centered around a common theme. Just go over them briefly, tell yourself that you’ll remember them easily in the morning and lights out! Your subconscious takes over from there and gets busy. Try to bring them to mind before you get caught up in the day and if necessary, look over them quickly one more time before getting up.

This also might seed some dreams in English or other language. Even if what’s actually being spoken is nonsense, any kind of dream in a foreign language is a major learning milestone! Your mind is really starting to go to work on the language and you can expect a jump in progress to follow.

You can also use this technique to give yourself calm and confidence in any situation that makes you feel nervous by practicing key phrases or troublesome pronunciation and telling yourself that you will remember them perfectly when you need them.

Keep at this, and you’ll build up an impressive vocabulary and make steady progress in just minutes a day!

If you are able to read the contents of this post, but still feel unable to speak without feeling self-conscious and hesitant, all you need is a push in the right direction!
